Childish Religion

Although science has disproved religious claims time after time again, the majority of people on this planet are to a greater or lesser extent religious. The most stubborn of religious people are the creationist ones, who believe that God created everything and is actively involved in everyday life (he watches you, answers prayers, judges you etc.). These people often shield themselves and their children from rational thought and are (willingly) ignorant from scientific facts.

The real Shrek

We probably all know Shrek, the green ogre who lives in an ogre swamp. What most of us probably don't know is that the characteristics of Shrek are probably based on someone who really lived.

The Greatest Bird Song! A Song from the Lyre Bird.

The superb lyre bird is a songbird that lives in Australia. There, it puts up some of the most amazing singing performances of the entire animal kingdom. Really, these are not just some pretty bird songs; they are in a league of their own. The superb lyre bird would be worthy competition for Police Academy’s Larvell Jones. Click to hear and see the incredible performance of this small performer with narration of Sir David Attenborough.

Unimaginable suffering

This photo won the 1994 “Pulizer Prize”. It depicts a starving child during the 1993 Sudan famine, while it is crawling to a UN food camp, about a kilometer away. Behind the child, a vulture is waiting for it to die, so it can eat it.

French kiss

Wikipedia: "A French kiss is a kiss in which one participant's tongue touches the partner's lips or tongue and usually enters his or her mouth. A French kiss is a slow passionate kiss which is usually considered intimate, romantic, erotic or sexual. A French kiss is generally considered an erotic kiss usually reserved for lovers.
In many parts of the world, this kind of kissing as a public display of affection is discouraged and may even be regarded as taboo. A French kiss is often used in cinema to indicate sexual desire between lovers."

Obviously, the French kiss is associated with love, but did you know what you are really doing when you'are wrestling each other's tongues?

A horrible death

Duty is heavy like a mountain, but death is as light as a feather. This is what the samurai code of honour says. Samurai were the medieval knights of Japan and served their masters with a passion. If a samurai failed at carrying out his duty, he would bring shame upon himself and his family. To save face, he was sometimes allowed to commit a gruesome form of ritual suicide (seppuku).

Prehistoric crocodile beats T-Rex

We probably all think the T-Rex was the most feared and powerful creature in the prehistoric era. However, according to Gregory M. Erickson of Florida State University, the Deinosuchus was more powerful than the T-Rex. This creature lived during the late Cretaceous and its name means “terrible crocodile”. Deinosuchus fossils have been found in ten U.S. states, including Texas, Montana, and many states along the East Coast. Some of them were also found in northern Mexico.

A car that makes Ferrari’s look like turtles

The Bugatti Veyron is a truly incredible car. It beats other super cars on so many levels, it is just mind blowing. Here are some facts that make it extraordinary:

Just one set of tyres costs about  €20.000 ($26.000), that’s only a tiny bit of the total price tag which is a staggering €1.9 million ($2.5 million), which you can expect from a car that is test driven for 500 km (312 miles), to make sure there are no defects, and the customer is happy,
which he will be with a car that delivers an enormous 1001 horsepower (1200 for the Super Sport version), which propels it to a top speed of 407 km/h (253 mph), which was not fast enough so they built the Super Sport version to reach 431 km/h (268 mph), both much faster than a Ferrari Enzo (350 km/h – 220 mph).

Orangutan prostitute

For decades, great apes have been used as a means of making money for man. However, their financial
extortion has hit a new low with the prostitution of female orangutans. Once again, humanity has shown its dark side. The picture below shows Pony, a female orangutan that was used as a sex slave in an Indonesian prostitute village. Her hair had been shaved, and she sat on a mattress while being chained to a wall. She was used to satisfying the sexual urges of men, and would present herself every time a man walked past her.

Fighting 100 men in a row, the ultimate Mortal Kombat

Less than 20 people in history have ever completed the exhaustive, painful and incredibly challenging 100 men kumite. So what is the 100 men kumite? Well, it is a test in kyokushinkai karate, one of the toughest styles of karate. Kyokushinkai says hard fighting (in the ring! not smacking people senseless in the streets) is the only way to know how good you are. To test their fighters’ ability, kyokushinkai’s founder (Masutatsu Oyama) devised the ultimate challenge, the 100 men kumite. This means one person has to fight 100 men in a row in rounds lasting for 1.5 to 2 minutes.

Kevin Richardson, ‘The Lion Whisperer’

Most of us have heard of, Cesar Millan, ‘The Dog Whisperer’, but who of you has heard of ‘The Lion Whisperer’? It is not a joke, Kevin Richardson plays with these big cats as if they were nothing more but small kittens. His way of interacting with them is nothing short of amazing as he literally walks with lions. Aside from lions, Richardson also works with leopards and hyenas.

Antimatter, real or science fiction?

Have you seen the movie ‘Angels and Demons’ with Tom Hanks? In that movie, people tried to destroy the Vatican with antimatter, produced at CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire / European Council for Nuclear Research).

So what is antimatter? Well, in the beginning of the universe there was matter and antimatter. Matter is what we and everything around us is made of. Antimatter is the opposite of matter. If the two collide, they annihilate each other, producing large amounts of energy. 0.5 grams of antimatter + 0.5 grams of matter create an explosion as powerful as the atomic bomb that destroyed the city of Hiroshima in World War Two! This is because a matter and antimatter explosion is about 100% efficient at turning matter into energy, whereas an atomic bomb is only about 1% efficient.

The Door to Hell

If hell ever had a gateway, it would look like this. Situated near the town of Darvaza in Turkmenistan,  ‘the Door to Hell’ it is in fact a burning gas deposit. In 1971, Soviet geologists were drilling for natural gas when the ground beneath the drilling platform collapsed. Accidentally they discovered a big cavern with natural gas. To prevent the gas from spreading into the atmosphere, the geologists decided to ignite it, thinking the gas would be burned off in a matter of days. However, things did not work out the way they planned them, and more than 40 years later, the cavern is still burning. To this day, it remains one of the most awe inspiring sites on Earth.

Serial Killer Ed Gein, the real Hannibal Lecter

Movie characters like Norman Bates (Psycho), Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Jame Gumb (The Silence of the Lambs) are probably characters we don't want to meet in real-life. Ironically, these characters are based on the American murderer Ed Gein who lived in Plainfield, Wisconsin.

Our brain

Every day we learn more about the human body and its possibilities. However, the brain is still a mystery for many scientists and psychologists. Our brain is like the human CPU, and our body can’t work without it. Below you can find nine facts about our brain. With special thanks to bsnprogram.com!

Yellowstone Super Volcano

Do you remember that disaster movie 2012? It was an immense orgy of special effects, natural disasters, and ridiculous escapes. Although most of the disasters are unlikely, not all of them were bogus, for example, this one scene where Woody Harrelson was standing in front of a super volcano when it exploded. It could become reality, since there really is a super volcano in North America, which is located under Yellowstone National Park. It is completely underground, and scientists have seen the floor of Yellowstone rise 3 inches per year since 2004, which means that pressure inside the volcano could be building.

A real ‘angry bird’

You know angry birds? Well, this one exists in real-life. Meet the cassowary. This particular bird looks more like a feathered velociraptor from Jurassic Park than your occasional black bird. The cassowary is an extremely territorial flightless bird that is known to kick at people with a knifelike claw on each foot. Its hot temper is probably the reason why it hasn’t gone extinct like the dodo.

Liger, the biggest cat on the planet

Have you ever seen a fully grown African lion or a Siberian tiger at the zoo? If you have, you probably know they are nothing short of huge; they dwarf even the biggest of humans. The biggest lions can weigh about 550 lbs (250 kg) and the biggest tiger species, the Siberian tiger, can weigh up to 700 lbs (318 kg). So let’s say you were to combine a male lion and a female tiger. What would you get? The answer, you would get an enormous hybrid called a liger. Ligers can weigh up to 904 lbs (410 kg), dwarfing their lion and tiger parents.
