Liger, the biggest cat on the planet

Have you ever seen a fully grown African lion or a Siberian tiger at the zoo? If you have, you probably know they are nothing short of huge; they dwarf even the biggest of humans. The biggest lions can weigh about 550 lbs (250 kg) and the biggest tiger species, the Siberian tiger, can weigh up to 700 lbs (318 kg). So let’s say you were to combine a male lion and a female tiger. What would you get? The answer, you would get an enormous hybrid called a liger. Ligers can weigh up to 904 lbs (410 kg), dwarfing their lion and tiger parents.



While they may sound like the ultimate feline predator, ligers do not occur in the wild, because tigers and lions do not mate in the wild. Apart from that, a liger’s body would probably be a big disadvantage in the wild: it would need to eat lots of meat and because it’s so heavy, its skeleton would probably be prone to painful joint problems.
