The Door to Hell

If hell ever had a gateway, it would look like this. Situated near the town of Darvaza in Turkmenistan,  ‘the Door to Hell’ it is in fact a burning gas deposit. In 1971, Soviet geologists were drilling for natural gas when the ground beneath the drilling platform collapsed. Accidentally they discovered a big cavern with natural gas. To prevent the gas from spreading into the atmosphere, the geologists decided to ignite it, thinking the gas would be burned off in a matter of days. However, things did not work out the way they planned them, and more than 40 years later, the cavern is still burning. To this day, it remains one of the most awe inspiring sites on Earth.
